“Hemp” is a term used to classify varieties of Cannabis Plants that contain 0.3% or less THC content. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is one of the primary chemical compounds related to cannabis plants that have a psychoactive effect. So basically, Hemp is a Cannabis plant that has been bred to contain small enough amount of THC to not have any psychoactive effects. That is why Hemp is now referred to as an “industrial crop”.
“Marijuana” is the name used for any Hemp plant grown with more than 0.3% of THC.
So in effect, Hemp plants are very similar to marijuana plants, but with the chemical compounds linked to psychoactive effects drastically reduced. Industrial Hemp plants are used to produce crucial resources such as food, rope, clothing, paper, housing material, and more recently CBD products.
